Network mechanics / Explained

What a network fee is paying for

Separate network costs from service fees, and understand why a small transfer does not always have a small fee.

The takeaway

Check the operation, network and total route cost. Keep a service request separate from a transaction confirmed on-chain.

Separate amount from computation

On Ethereum, gas measures the work an operation requires; the fee pays for that work. A transaction’s value is not the only factor. Sending a token or interacting with a contract can involve different operations from a simple native-asset transfer. As a result, a low-value action can still have a meaningful network cost. Never assume that doubling the amount sent will necessarily double the fee.

Read an estimate as an estimate

A displayed estimate depends on network conditions and the operation being attempted. Ethereum fees are paid in ETH, even when another token is involved, unless a service explicitly provides a different arrangement. An included transaction that fails can still consume gas. Before authorising anything, distinguish the maximum allowance, the estimated cost and any separate service charge. Ask what happens if the operation fails and which parts of the cost remain payable.

Compare complete routes

A lower fee shown on another network is not automatically a cheaper way to reach the same destination. Consider whether both sides support that network, whether a bridge is involved and whether another transfer will be needed later. In SafeCoin, a withdrawal request is a request for review, not a network broadcast. Do not infer a transaction fee or confirmation from the request status alone. Compare actual route details and timing when an execution service supplies them, rather than treating an educational example as a live quote.
